When you start to read this story, you have to remind yourself that it was written in the earlier part of the 20th Century. The style and the pace is much different than most books you buy today. There is much more descriptive scenes that can tend to drag the story along, but in reality they add to it. It will just be slow to those who aren’t used to such writing style.
I really didn’t know what to expect from this story. The author kept quite a bit in the dark so I never felt like it knew what was happening or understood it all. I enjoyed that.
I have to admit that a few of the characters got on my nerves, but I could still see them acting in the manners portrayed. They seemed flighty too much of the time, but then they were looking for ghosts in a house no one else would dare stay the night in.
Overall, the story wasn’t as creepy as I was expecting. Maybe I was looking for horror. This is not a horror story though it could easily become one. It is the tale of a haunted house. Chills will go down your spine.
If you haven’t read this paranormal classic, I highly suggest you do. I had never heard of it until I researching classical paranormal stories. It is one all paranormal lovers should read.
