I went into reading this book with the movie in mind. I honestly didn’t watch the entire thing as it was too intense for me. There were many excuses to keep leaving the room while keeping an ear tuned to what was happening. But the book was much more subdued while at the same time totally creeping me out.
The fact that the book was more suspenseful than scary added to the quality. A well written book doesn’t have to go into too much detail if the writer gives just enough for the imagination to fill in the gaps. This is one of those well written books.
It is rather slow paced compared to most suspense stories of today, but once you get into it the style is perfect for the story set back many years ago. Actually, it is also one that is good to read out loud. Maybe do it on a dark and stormy night. (Sorry, had to say that.)
If you like classical ghost stories, this is one you really have to read. It will have you looking for the woman in black in your own life.
Note: I bought this book with my own funds with no expectation of a positive review.
