I love how the author presents the story. One chapter is from his viewpoint while the next chapter will be in his mother’s words. You get a glimpse into the mind and emotions of the young boy/man and then that of the woman who influenced him so greatly.
Nothing is simple, or should I say black or white. Once you get into the soul of the two characters, you realize that things are not as simple as you thought they were. Everyone didn’t get along. Yet not everyone of different races hated each other. The book does an excellent job of discussing the complex cultures and people.
I appreciate the fact that the author didn’t put on rose colored glasses when he wrote the nor did he paint anyone as the evil entity in his life. These people were not just based on real people. They were real and very easy to relate to.
A great book. This is one I think should go on your bucket list as a future classic.
Note: I received this book from a friend with no expectation of a positive review.
