I read over the other reviews. Some were ridiculous as always. People don’t understand true literary writing often. This is not a book written to fill your romantic or suspenseful fantasies. I love those books as well so I’m not knocking them. This is a literary, historical fiction. And as a successful and creative writer can do, he steps outside the writing box and does a magnificent job.
First off, this book vacillates between points of view. It starts off mainly going between Werner and Marie-Laurant. It also jumps between time periods. There is the ‘present’ day of the war and then there are the years where they are developing and finding their roles to fill for the rest of the book. Toward the end of the book, other points of view are used to round out the story. But there is never any doubt whose eyes we are looking through and what period we are in. Many people who didn’t like the book cited this as the main reason. If you this is huge in deciding how much you enjoy the book, then skip it. It’s a creative style that has to be appreciated.
The characters are deep and very complex. You get to know them as though they are right there in front of you with a view of their deepest fears and desires. The author does a wonderful job of bringing the reader in to experience everything the characters are.
The settings are amazing. You can almost smell the smoke as it burns around them after the bombs fall. You can almost hear the snowflakes fall through the ‘eyes’ of the young blind girl. The author’s writing takes your breath away and spirits you away to another time and place.
The author’s use of words is something to admire and imitate. A great writer that has you wanting to read on and still want more once the last sentence fades.
Another critique were historical inaccuracies. I’m a history buff and have a degree in it, but to be honest, I forgot to even pay attention to those details. The story itself was too good to care about the details. I imagined it all as a creative new world and setting and pushed history aside. That made it so much more enjoyable.
If you love stories that pull you deep with a character and appeal to all your senses, please get a copy of this book. Wonderful read.
Note: Purchased this book with my own funds with no expectation of a positive review.
