What is a Short Story
A short story typically is 1200 to 10,000 words. This scale varies from publisher to publisher, but this is a common range found. It can be in any genre. Writers sometimes find that a story cannot be stretched without lowering the quality. The result is a short story.
Short and Sweet
The point of the short story is that it can easily be read in one sitting or over the course of just a couple of hours unlike novels that could days or weeks. Many readers are drawn to them for that reason alone.
Foundation of Novel
Many writers find themselves writing a short story for a contest or a magazine. When they are done, the characters and plot will not leave them alone. Before you know it, the short story has become the foundation of a novel. What a great way to get started.
What to Do With Them
Many short stories are great for contests. Magazines and publishers sometimes offer these contests to help expose great writers and to find new ones to publish. I highly encourage you to enter these contests. Or you could submit a short story to a magazine for publication or publish them yourself in an anthology. A collection of five to ten stories is great to create a full ‘book’ for readers.
