Edit Before Posting
Read over what you have written before you post it. Does it make sense? Your fingers don’t always type what you want them to. Make sure the words reflect what you meant and that others will easily understand. If there is anything confusing, reword it.
Pay attention to anything that could be received as offensive. You might not think it is, but someone could take it that way. I’ve written posts and had people get highly insulted. Other people read them and couldn’t understand why they got all upset, but they did. You’re not going to be able to avoid this all the time but make a concerted effort to have all your communications worded where offense has to be sought to be found and even then it’s a stretch.
Use the Right Word Correctly
Words in the English language can be more than one thing. You need to make sure you use the right words correctly when you post and comment. Don’t use slang if you can help it. Some people don’t know what you mean and could take offense. Remember that with many people you are networking with, you are not close friends. You are just getting to know each other.
Step Back and Think in Their Shoes
Remember that no matter how you send a message, it is all about how it is received. I’ve messed up many a time where I sent a message that didn’t sound insulting at all. Others who read it didn’t either, but all it took was the one person who did to cause a lot of drama. Now you can’t avoid communication issues completely. They will happen. But if you take extra precautions and step into the recipient's shoes, you might avoid it a lot more often.
