What is Going On?
What is happening in our culture to find that most children cannot read on a basic level? Most of us live in a false reality. We assume everyone can read at the level that we do. The truth is that a large number cannot.
Research shows that nearly a third of all students in the fourth grade are reading the basic levels or below. (need to cite stat) What does that signify? It means our youth who will one day lead our country will be intellectually incapable of leading us into that future. Now that is a scary thought.
What is Basic?
Basic is not as simple as you might think. It is a combination of factors that goes beyond being able to read a word correctly. Processing marks into a word is technically reading, but true reading involves “Basic reading skills include language, concentration, visual processing skills, auditory processing skills, memory and reasoning.” (http://www.learningrx.com/basic-reading-skills-faq.htm) It is taking what you read and being able to understand and applying it.
Importance of Reading
Being able to have basic reading skills is vital for survival. Understanding what the stop sign says keeps us all safe. Understanding that certain items cannot be taken on a plane protects us all. Basic reading skills are a necessity.
Reading helps us navigate through life. We know how to safely operate machine, prepare foods, and even purchase and sell things. Without the basic reading skills, individuals cannot function in society to the degree needed to survive. That means waste of time and money spent by society and government to help these uneducated people along.
