This is one networking tip that you can pretty much bank on applying throughout all areas of your life if you want to find success. Listening is a skill that few have and is rarely sought, but it is one of the most valuable tools you’ll find.
Don’t Talk Too Much
Online or in real life, don’t talk too much. It’s a bad habit to get into. Talking too much means you aren’t listening. Your mouth is running, but your ears are bored. An ever running mouth pushes people away. No one wants to be around someone who never lets them get a word in.
Talking too much tells the other person that you are only interested in why you say, which interprets that you only care about yourself. So why do I want to connect with you? What benefit would knowing you give to me if all you care about is you?
Talking too much turns people off. Bad for networking. In other words, don’t do it.
Use Your Ears and Learn
You’ll find a lot more benefits by listening more often than you talk. When you listen, you have several things going for you.
Remember that the goal of networking is to make connections that you can use soon or down the road. By listening more and talking less, you open the door to those connections and strengthen them.
Practice talking less. Listen to what others say. Note what you learn. See how it can benefit both them and you.
