I know one blogger who goes onto the various social and professional networking sites and posts links to her work. This is great as she has very interesting posts and great titles. She then leaves after the post. There is no participation by her at all. Now she does get some traffic from these, but she would get so much more if she’d participate. Why? Participation gets people’s attention.
Others get to know you more through your participation than through your posts. They can connect to you and in the end network with you. Not participating puts up a wall between you and everyone else. I’ve had that same blogger say that if someone sent her a message, she’d respond. That’s not participation. That’s telling everyone they have to chase after you. Personally, if I have to chase you, then you’re not worth my networking time.
Being standoffish will not help you be successful. People might be curious about you, but they won’t be eager to see what else you do or if they can purchase your book. Think about who you are drawn to. Ask yourself why. They generally are open and receptive, not standoffish.
