What It Means to Be Overbearing
When you are overbearing, you are rather type A or domineering in a rude way. Authors who act like this can create enemies real quick. They need to be pushy and want everything on their time table. When they follow up, the message seems rude and arrogant.
I had an author approach me for a review and an interview. When she read the questions, she responded in a very overbearing way. I was informed that my questions were stupid and that my trashy site wasn’t good enough for her book. Needless to say, she is one I will never work with and my friends have sworn to avoid.
Note: I can count on one hand the number of reviews she has on her book she published four years ago. Think others felt the same way I did?
How to Avoid it
Now we all have unique personalities. Being type A is not bad when you temper it and use it correctly. Yes, it can be done. I know someone real well who is very type A but never is rude or domineering. She has learned the finesse of being a type A. So can you.
Stop and think before you act. Even emails and texts can reveal your overbearing traits. Have someone else read your words and help you smooth them out. It is great to have someone of a different personality trait to help you smooth your words and work with others.
